Please Respond to the Following Scenarios

We’re presenting the following scenarios in hopes of giving you a better idea of what kinds of challenges you might be presented with, and to get some idea of what your approach might be.  These are hypothetical examples based on Out & About staff experiences.  Please read through them and answer to the best of your ability.

1.   You have been given a very small budget with which to run a cooking class on Wednesday afternoons.  Given Out & About’s mission statement and the necessity to run the class within the small budget allowance, which option would you choose and why?

Run the activity in Imagine!’s main building which has a functional kitchen, is conveniently located, and has no additional rental charge.

Run the class in a church that is centrally located in the community, has a beautiful kitchen and dining facility, has several other activities running in other parts of the facility simultaneously, charges enough rent that the budget will be very tight.

Run the class in a church that is not centrally located, has a modest kitchen and dining facility, has no other activities going on in the building, and charges no rent.

Explain your answer below.

2.   You are working out in the community with a small group of five participants and one other staff.  You are in a local mall.  The staff you are working with departs with two participants to walk to some other part of the mall, with the agreement that you will all meet up at 3:00, in thirty minutes at a central location in the mall.  You are supervising the remaining three participants, one of whom is in a wheelchair and requires your assistance to push the chair.  The other two participants are able to walk and are verbal and capable of following your directions, but need to be within your range of vision at all times.  At 3:00 you are at the meeting point with the three participants you are supervising.  The other staff person has not arrived.  At 3:20 the other staff person still hasn’t arrived, and the participant in the wheelchair has told you that she or he needs to use the restroom.  This person needs assistance in the bathroom and is the opposite gender from you.  You call the other staff person, but there is no answer.  It is now 3:30.  Describe how you would handle this situation:

3.   You are with three participants, one of whom is in a wheelchair.  You have just parked at the Pepsi Center in Denver and are to meet another staff driving another vehicle with more Out & About participants in it.  You do not see the staff person you are to meet, and when you call their cell phone, the cell phone is not answering or not working.  In the meantime, one of the participants is distressed because s/he is anxiously looking for the other staff person as well.  S/he begins to cry and then shout angrily at you.  Describe how you would handle this situation:

4.   When you drop off one of the participants at home, the mother tells you that she is not happy with services, because you dropped off the participant late, and that you or other staff are always late and she is fed up.  You check your schedule, and you are right on time according to the schedule.  The mother of the participant is angry enough that she begins to shout at you and is using inappropriate language.  Describe how you would respond to this situation:
